How can digital technology contribute to the production of quality content in journalism? What has happened to gatekeepers in news media? How can editors and reporters preserve their autonomy and the culture of journalism? These are the key issues to be addressed at the international conference which will take place at the premises of the Budapest Goethe-Institut on 5 December 2016. The event is co-organized by the Center for Independent Journalism, the Hungarian Editors’ Forum and the Goethe-Institut. Participation is open upon registration till Monday, 28 November 2016.

Saša Leković, president of the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND), noticed that his car was damaged while driving on 27 October 2016. The auto mechanic told Leković that “two screws on the front right wheel were damaged with a saw”. Had he not slowed down and stopped the car, the screws would have broken, states HND on its website. European Press Prize – the awards for excellence in journalism – is open for entries until 16 December 2016. Entries must have been published between 1 December 2015 and 31 December 2016. Journalists can apply both individually and in team for the Freedom of Expression Grant funded by the European Center for Press and Media Freedom. The application deadline is 21 September 2016.
