Relaunching journalism – supporting investigative journalism and incubation services of digital media
Project period: 1 November 2015 – 31 December 2016

Based on its strategy plan, the Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) launched the project “Relaunching journalism – supporting investigative journalism and incubation services of digital media” aiming to strengthen independent, sustainable and accountable journalism in Hungary. During this project, CIJ implements activities to

  • provide resources and support for investigative journalism, including data-journalism in Hungary and
  • foster digital media skills and assist new, especially small-scale media operations with business and technical support.

Workshops and all events to be held as part of the project are free of charge for participants who are requested to register online. Application forms to specific events are published on the website and the Facebook-page of the Center for Independent  Journalism. Information about the implemented events and programmes are also available  there or can be requested via phone (+36 1 609 5392) or by sending a message to konzultacio@cij.hu.

A/ Improving investigative and data journalism skills and capacities

  • Workshops on the following issues:
    • Data journalism: tools to collect and analyse data, research in data-bases, basic coding skills for journalists
    • Protecting journalism sources
    • Fact-checking and verification of online visual sources
    • Freedom of information requests in journalism
    • Data  visualisation and interactive storytelling techniques
    • Digital safety tools for journalists
    • Data journalism skills enhancement and trends of investigative journalism – summer camp in Pécs
  • Small grants for investigative journalists to use data-journalism and interactive  journalism techniques
  • Publication of tip sheets in Hungarian: A thematic collection of literature and resources with links and case studies on the topics of data and interactive journalism
  • Mentorship programme for young journalists and students
  • Legal and technical assistance

B/ Assistance and technical support to media, focusing on small-scale media operations

    • Digital storytelling and video journalism
    • Use of digital tools  and delivery platforms/formats, such as mobile, video, webdocs
    • Learning fund-raising (including crowd-funding) and business management skills
    • Digital branding and use of social media
  • Hackaton” on using digital tools and platforms

C/ Consultation: The Center for Independent Journalism offers free consultations for journalists and small-scale media operations in 2016. Application for these services is available via phone, e-mail (konzultacio@cij.hu) and via submitting this application form in connection with the following issues:

  • fact-checking and verification of data and journalism sources
  • digital safety tools for journalists
  • legal issues and regulation, protecting sources, freedom information requests, data protection (the counselling does not include legal representation of cases)
  • ethical issues, self-regulation, complaints
  • business counselling, fundraising, marketing and branding
  • the use of social media
  • the use of digital formats and mobile platforms in journalism
  • video production and distribution
  • web-development
  • alternative business models

D/ Research and conference

  • Needs assessment study on local journalism: online questionnaire and interviews – The findings will be published on a conference during the fall 2016
