The international conference “Investigative reporting in East and Central Europe” will take place in Budapest from 28 to 29 October, 2005. The event will gather 60 investigative reporters from Ukraine, Byelorussia, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The conference is organized by Scoop – a support structure for investigative journalism in Eastern and Central Europe based in Copenhagen, and the Center for Independent Journalism, Budapest.

At the conference you will meet 60 investigative reporters from Ukraine, Byelorussia, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. Reporters who have worked with the support of Scoop will present their investigations of corruption, smuggling, trafficking and many other issues. Some investigations are done in the micro cosmos of small provincial towns, others are transnational investigations covering several countries. Four investigations implemented with support from Scoop have won journalism awards.
Keynote speakers of the conference will be:
Peter Eigen, the founding father of Transparency International – The role of journalism in the fight of corruption
Bruce Shapiro, professor at Yale University – The pro’s and con’s of investigative reporting
Jürgen Roth, German freelance reporter who has done research of international organised crime since the Wall fell down – How to investigate international criminal structures?
The conference will start on Friday, October 28 at 9.30 and finish on Saturday, October 29 at 16.30 in Hotel Benczur (1068 Budapest, Benczúr utca 35.), where the participants will be accommodated.
